Shane Mulligan is a versatile percussionist and pedagogue who brings a multifaceted perspective to percussion, shaped by years of cross-disciplinary work and diverse musical contexts. His interests have led him into a range of artistic settings—from chamber and solo performance to large-scale collaborative projects and the exploration of non-Western traditions.
In recent years, Shane has performed on several of China’s leading contemporary music platforms, including Liaoning Spring, Liaoning province’s flagship performing arts series; Shanghai Oriental Arts Center’s Future Masters chamber concert series, where he presented the first all-percussion concert in the series’ history; and the full-length Crash–Fusion percussion concert series at the Liaoning Grand Theatre and People’s Art Theater. He remains an active performer in China, contributing to the country’s evolving and dynamic musical landscape.
Beyond performance, Shane’s compositional work has received positive recognition from organizations like the Percussive Arts Society, and he continues to explore writing as an extension of his performance and teaching. Additionally, he has served as a judge for a number of international competitions, including the Bright China International Music Competition, the Asia Music Competition of Taiwan, and the IPEA Elite Percussion Competition. His own mentorship has supported national-level student achievements throughout China in both solo and ensemble competition.
Based in Shanghai, Shane co-directs the percussion program at Global Music School, where he oversees a vibrant studio and numerous percussion ensembles throughout the city. His principal teachers include Bob Nowak, Ralph Sorrentino, Eduardo Leandro, and Nani Agbeli. He holds degrees from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and West Chester University of Pennsylvania.
